Acting For a Cause

"...a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's most controversial comedy that up-ends Shakespeare for the better." - Chicago Tribune

With my own savings and through generous donations from the community, I was able to make this show a reality. I took the somewhat misogynist text of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew and completely gender-swapped it. Kate turned into Kris; a dude with an attitude problem. Petruchio turned into Penelope; a confident sex pot eager to turn the world on its head. And my personal favorite, the old miser Gremio turned into the glorious Gisella; a cougar with a bottle of wine always at the ready. We had a short but completely sold-out run at Madison Street Theater, where we managed to raise over $3,000 for Chicago Youth Shakespeare. This show challenged the standard narrative by proving that womxn are just as funny, if not more funny, than their male counterparts. I learned so much from this production and I see it as my greatest achievement to date.
